Tuesday night's City Council session ran nearly four hours, drew more than 60 residents to Council Chambers, and produced several decisions that will shape Port Laken's near-term future in tangible ways.

ROAD REPAIR FUNDING: $2.3 MILLION APPROVED

In the most straightforward vote of the evening, 5-1 in favor, the council approved reallocating $2.3 million from the city's general infrastructure reserve toward targeted road repairs on Harbor Drive, Eastside residential streets, and a section of Oak Avenue near the Pages & Prose commercial cluster.

Construction is scheduled to begin in late March, pending weather. A real-time project tracker will be hosted on the city's website.

LAKESIDE COMMONS AFFORDABLE HOUSING: APPROVED AFTER EXTENDED DEBATE

The evening's longest discussion centered on Lakeside Commons, a proposed 120-unit affordable housing development at the former Ridgeway Lumber site on Eastside Boulevard. The council voted 4-2 to approve the project with three conditions: a traffic impact study, a coordination meeting with the school district, and a design review.

SHORT-TERM RENTAL REGULATIONS: NEW RULES TAKE EFFECT IN 90 DAYS

The council unanimously approved a comprehensive short-term rental regulatory framework. All operators must obtain a city permit at $250 annually. Rentals in residential zones are capped at 90 days per calendar year. Fines for operating without a permit begin at $500 per day.

DOWNTOWN PARKING STUDY: $75,000 AUTHORIZED

The council authorized $75,000 for a comprehensive downtown parking study by traffic engineering firm Meridian Associates, with results expected by August.

The next City Council meeting is Tuesday, February 11, at 7 PM in Council Chambers.
